subject: Light Bulbs You Can Unscrew and Use as Flashlights [print this page]

A company in China called Magic Bulb has unveiled their newest creation in light bulbs, the Lightglobe. The Lightglobe is an LED light bulb with some novel enhancements such as a built-in rechargeable battery, an extendable neck, and an on/off switch right on the bulb. They've designed the bulb to double as a flashlight in an emergency, or just when you need a flashlight for any situation. While screwed in to a socket and functioning as an LED light bulb, the Lightglobe simultaneously charges its battery.

These light bulbs are just perfect for power outages. Arguably the worst part of any power outage is the loss of light. With some Rechargeable LED Lightglobes throughout the house, a power outage will hardly affect your lighting at all! Plus, if you happen to lose light in a room where you do not have any Lightglobes, you can unscrew one of them and carry it around like a flashlight illuminating things as the need arises. The Lightglobe runs on only four watts of power, which allows it to operate up to three hours on a full charge while not screwed in.

You might ask why this was never done before. For one thing, incandescent light bulbs run extremely hot. It's just not feasible to have complex circuitry in such close proximity to burning heat. Energy efficient LED light bulbs generate negligible amounts of heat, and so the components necessary for the Lightglobe can easily be integrated into most LED light bulbs. Not only that, but the low heat makes it easy and comfortable to use and hold as a flashlight.

A home filled with Rechargeable LED Lightglobes would be impervious to power losses, at least in the lighting department. The Lightglobe is expected to cost around $30 to $40 per bulb, so outfitting an entire house with these light bulbs would be very expensive indeed. That is until a year or two down the road when the light bulbs are paying you back with their efficiency. They're rated to last thousands and thousands of hours just like any other LED light bulb, so you would benefit from their energy efficiency for a long time to come.
