subject: The Science Behind the Scenes [print this page]

We're heading into the science lab for a little up close and personal dissection of the common vinyl window. Now, this is no ordinary, fly by the seat of your pants, dissection were going to do. No, it is a full on examination of the inner workings of our beloved vinyl windows and aluminum windows with the hopes that by looking a little closer, we might just get a glimpse at what it is that sets Croft windows apart from the products of other vinyl window and aluminum window manufacturers.

Scalpel please Now, with our first incision we'll find that a typical vinyl window is made up of a few very important parts. As windows move up the line in energy efficiency and quality, there are more pieces to the puzzle, but have no fear, we'll cover those when the time is right. So, back to the anatomy, there are a couple of indispensable parts to every vinyl window or aluminum window. The first is the glass. This is a bit obvious, but the truth is a window really isn't a window without it. There are a lot of different treatments and variations that can change the way the glass performs once the vinyl window or aluminum window is installed. A second major component is the sash.

So what is a window sash? The sash is an important part of traditionally built vinyl windows and aluminum windows. It is the movable section of the window, which, depending on the design of the vinyl window, can function in very different ways. Some vinyl windows and even aluminum windows have a fixed sash that cannot be opened. With our dissection just getting started, there is a lot more to come. Next time we'll look and the other components of a vinyl window and how they all fit together to create a quality Croft vinyl window.
