As one of the designers in the Chicago Fashion Incubator, menswear designer, Jonnie Rettele of Nonnie Threads, is an emerging design talent who makes utilitarian look cool. She describes her line as "refined utilitarian." I describe her designs as comfortable and cool updated vintage, with a hint of military. Jonnie takes utilitarian to a new level with her shirts that have two upper front pockets with button flaps, two upper pockets on the sides of the sleeves, and button down straps at the tops on each shoulder. She has created a look that can be worn dressed up or down. Her five button, cool-looking stand up collar jacket has a zipper half way down the front, at the bottom of the jacket. She uses cotton shirting, twills, and woven fabrics with texture for her designs.

Jonnie was raised in southern Illinois, but in 2001, she moved to Chicago to attend school. In 2005, Jonnie graduated from the Illinois Institute of Art at Chicago, with a Bachelor of Art degree in Fashion Design. Around the age of twenty, Jonnie knew she wanted to be a designer, and after working at other jobs, she started making clothes, which she sold on Etsy.

One of her mentors was a buyer at the East Bank Club, and also a couple of her friends, who were influential in having her line made in Chicago.

Jonnie's advice to aspiring designers is to be able to multitask, and be ready to do all of the jobs necessary to get your brand on the market.

Her design philosophy is simply to dress how you feel most comfortable, without sacrificing looking your personal best.

Jonnie's mantra: Nonnie is an homage to the roots of our heritage, priding itself on producing durable, high quality clothing locally in Chicago, Illinois. By balancing the functional, social, and stylistic needs of men, Nonnie offers the versatility that men demand, and is adaptable for anything the day may bring. Nonnie's refined utilitarian look provides distinction for men who feel unique, comfortable, and nuanced in their style.

Keep up with Jonnie on Facebook and Twitter, Tumblr. Her website is: www.nonniethreads.com.
