subject: Different Types of Indoor Lighting Fixtures [print this page]

Indoor lighting fixtures come in a wide array of styles. Through the years, countless innovations have come out and the designs are getting bolder and creative than before. The popular ones which are most used include recessed lights, pendant lights, chandeliers, wall sconces and track lights. Let's take a closer look at each of these different types of indoor lighting fixtures and know their many features and uses.

Recessed lights are otherwise known as can lights (short for canister lights) or pot lights. They are lighting fixtures that are embedded right into the ceiling. Their two parts include a trim and a housing unit. The trim is what we normally see when we look up while the housing contains the lamp holder and is installed deep into the ceiling. These types of lights can be used to illuminate a wide area much like a floodlight or they can be set up to focus their beams like a spotlight.

Chandeliers and pendants are lighting fixtures that are hung from the ceiling. Chandeliers differ from pendants in that they have many branches that can house multiple sets of lights. Pendant lights usually just have one set of lights. Because of the smaller size of pendant lights, they can be easily placed on corners and nooks of the home. The chandeliers, on the other hand, are often relegated towards the center of the dining room and the kitchen because of their massive size.

Wall sconces are obviously wall-mounted units. Typically the lights are directed upwards but depending on the shades they can also be directed in a downward fashion. Wall sconces are often used to brighten up the bathroom vanity mirror. They can also be installed in hallways to provide illumination and create interest in the walls.

Track lights can be mounted readily in the ceiling. They contain several sets of lights that can be positioned anywhere you want. This clever design allows you to direct the beam of one light for task lighting while the rest can be used for accent lighting.
