When you're expecting a child, your body will change dramatically. If your pregnancy falls during the summer, you may find yourself wanting to go for a swim to keep cool (and even to take some pressure off your feet!)

In the past, many maternity swimwear designs have been somewhat frumpy, rather than embracing the beautiful bump! Now more than ever, swimwear lines are encouraging mothers-to-be to show off their curves while taking a dip in the pool.

Tankinis for Expecting Mothers

Tankinis are one of the greatest styles for pregnant women since you can still have the feel of a two piece bikini but are able to cover the belly if you feel the need to do so (or fold it up when you want to flaunt it).

Look for styles with adjustable straps as they create comfort for the expecting mum. The back is normally higher so there is more support. Tankinis also offer better bust support which is crucial for pregnant women as their bust size increases and causes more stress on the body. Tankinis come in all colours and designs and you can mix and match the different tops and bottoms.

Maternity Halterkinis

The next step up from a tankini are maternity halterkinis. Halterkinis, like the tankinis, allow you to have the coverage of the belly and the flexibility of the two piece suit. The halterkinis are popular because they tie around the back of the neck and give the bust a good shape and a flattering neck line. You can also use the halter top to wear as a singlet so that you do not have to change when you get to the pool or beach. Just throw on a pair of jeans and you are ready to go.

The Baby Doll

The baby doll style of swimwear for pregnant women is also very popular. These swimwear garments offer the most support and coverage. You can purchase the baby doll in both a halter and tank style. It is a one piece swimwear "dress" that you can wear over swimsuit bottoms. The longer skirt covers the upper thigh and creates a mini dress. The baby doll completely covers up the baby bump for the least exposure. There are also strapless versions of this dress.

Wraps for Maternity Swimwear

Women can also purchase a wrap to cover up and stay stylish regardless of the type of swimsuit that she wears. These wraps also give a great splash of colour. An alternative to a wrap is a kaftan. Like a large over shirt, this garment covers everything up, but is also usually made in a sheer fabric, which still allows it to be cool on a hot summer's day.
