subject: What Should You Know About Retractable Awnings? [print this page]

The protection against glare, heat, sun, and the rays of Ultraviolet (UV) light that retractable awnings can give are why many think that they are a good investment. Their durability, simple installation, and the fact that they are capable of being folded away when not being used are just some of the advantages they have over awnings that are fixed. A plus is that they also make the exterior of any building, commercial or private home, look really good.

A major reason that a retractable awning lasts quite a bit longer than a fixed one is that it can be folded away when weather conditions are such that it is likely that the fabric and framework will be damaged. These conditions can include rainstorms, heavy snow, and winds of high velocity. Some of these awnings are even equipped with motors that are automatic and sensors that active the motors in order to put the awning away when conditions warrant it.

What factors should be considered when looking at a retractable awning? The ones that are the four most important are the type of finish on the frame, the materials the frame is made from, the fabric of the covering itself, and the type of fasteners.

It is imperative to the longevity of the awning itself that the framework on which it depends be made from a strong material such as aluminum. Steel is prone to rust whether it has been galvanized or not, wood is subject to rot, and PVC or plastic in the end becomes brittle. The fittings and fastenings are also of import as they can end the useful life of an awning by breakage if they are of poor quality.

Exposure to the elements is often considered the worst enemy of any awning. The damage that can result includes ripping, fading, tearing, and loose stitching. Water is also an enemy as it can cause mildew staining if the awning fabric is repeatedly dampened without a chance to completely dry out.

An acrylic fabric on the other hand is much more durable. They process used to dye it makes it fade resistant. Its weave allow it to dry quicker thus virtually eliminating a chance at rot or mildew.

It is a sound idea to choose retractable awnings for your residence or the building that houses a business. It helps to lower the electrical usage in the form of reduced cooling costs as an air condition does not need to be used as often. A plus for those looking to save their money.
