When you get your first orchid it feels greatWhen you get your first orchid it feels great. You have a beautiful thing in front of you that you can admire... but now you are responsible for it. It is up to you to know some orchid care techniques so that you can look after it properly. If you do look after it properly then it will live for many years. If you don't... well it could die quite quickly.

For people with their first orchid getting into the area of orchid care can seem overwhelming. This is easy for me to understand as I have seen many people get worried. With experience you should find it much easier.

Many people struggle with knowing how much to water the plant. This is often where people go wrong and if you get this part of the orchid care wrong then your plant will die. Do not over water your orchid. It only requires watering about once per week, no more than that. Always check right under the soil to ensure that it is completely dry before you water it. If in doubt leave it a bit longer.

Knowing when to re-pot your orchid can be tricky. They often don't need re-potting as much as people think. If you do need to re-pot then do it in the spring, if you miss it then wait for next year. Don't put the orchid into a pot that is too big. It likes to have its roots packed in.

Orchids love the sunlight. One of your tasks in orchid care is positioning the orchid correctly. You need them to get a lot of sun but you don't want them in direct sunlight for to long.

My aim was to give you some of the basics of orchid care. I hope that you can use some of these techniques on your orchid. Please keep at it because although you will make mistakes you will learn from them.
