Buffalo Roofing Shingles: What Kind Should I Get.

Roofing in Buffalo, NY is different than roofing in much of the rest of the country. There are lots of local factors that determine what your roof may need. The snow and ice that we get in WNY (Western New York) means that certain practices need to be standard in Buffalo that may not be necessary in other areas.

One of the most common questions I get is what kind of roofing shingles should I get for my home? But the first thing you need to understand are the types of roofing shingles out there.

The different kinds of roofing shingles are Rubber Roll, 3Tab, Architectural, Metal, and Tile.

Rubber Roll is used for flat roofs. It should never be used for pitched roofs. It can last 10-30 years depending on the quality and if its properly installed. If you have a Rubber Roll Roof, its important to make sure it is resealed every several years.

3Tab is a very low quality roofing shingle. It will often claim to last for 25 or 30 years but the reality is, it may start to deteriorate after 12 to 15 years. Be careful of hiring someone who tells you that the 3Tab will last 25 to 30 years. You may want to ask them if they will back that up with a personal guarantee and in writing. I doubt any of them would be willing to make that kind of guarantee because it just doesnt actually last that long.

My personal recommendation is Architectural Shingles. They will far outlast most others and they look a lot better too. Some Architectural shingles will last up to 75 years if theyre properly installed. And they dont cost that much more than regular shingles.

Theres also Tile and Metal roofing but I wouldnt recommend them. They can be as much as three times more expensive and some of them still dont have the kind of guarantee that a good architectural shingle has. The payoff, just doesnt justify the cost.
