I know that I love singing Shout to the Lord just as much as Amazing Grace accompanied by a church full of believers. I'm pretty sure that a number of worship leaders are missing out on a golden opportunity.
Some may question whether new Christian music is okay for worship. The newer churches tend to feature this type of music regularly Unfortunately at the older churches there is a resistance to the newer Christian music. Hymns are supposed to be songs that praise and worship the Lord. I feel that modern Christian music does indeed do that.
I find it hard to believe that anyone would think a song like I Can Only Imagine does not glorify God. The issue here is one of fear. People in general fear new things.
Regrettably this is not just a one sided issue. Most of the modern large churches do not use the old traditional hymns as part of their worship services. Motivated by a fear of losing the young crowd these modern churches often refrain from the old God songs. It is of course okay to cater to the youth somewhat. Isn't it possible to make both the young and old happy? I'm fairly confident that adding a few more traditional hymns will not scare the youth away.
The opinions I have presented are merely that opinions from an average layperson. I do believe that interaction between Christians is being limited by such a trivial matter. Interactions that are mutually beneficial, and also benefit the church as a whole. Christians should unite through their love of God and these God songs new or old. Find the right combination of modern and traditional Christian songs, this will create a wonderful worship experience for all.
I feel the perfect mix of new and old God songs provides the ideal worship experience. A suggestion to your pastor to add a little of one or the other to the service just might bring some new faces next Sunday morning. In the church that I normally attend there is an amazing mixture of people. I mean it is not strange to see a woman with a Mohawk singing and praising right next to a gentleman in a very nice suit. This to me is wonderful.
The generation gap seems to be the problem here to me. Historically there has always been resistance to the next generation of music, be it God songs or pop song for that matter. Which type of Christian music do you prefer? Who's to say that you can't like both? If you are set in your ways and refuse to give these newer God songs a chance you may be cheating yourself. I suggest that you check some of the Christian songs out from these artists and give them chance. There is something for everyone in today's Christian music.
