While doing some research I found out that TASERS are not categorized as firearms by our Federal Government. As a result, they can legally be bought and carried around in the majority of the 50 states! From what I've seen, they are illegal for non-law enforcement official to use in Washington D.C., MA HI, RI, MI, NJ, WI, NY and certain cities and counties. Connecticut and Illinois allow people to carry TASERS with some restrictions. I strongly suggest you consult your local police department when it comes to TASER laws in your area!
Being a Responsible Taser Owner
As a TASER owner and user, I take my responsibility to use it wisely very seriously. It's important that if you own and use a TASER that you do the same! Every cartridge made for TASERS has a dedicated serial code that is printed with a bar code right on the actual cartridge. In addition, 20-30 little miniature tags with the serial code on them are also found within the cartridge, so that when the TASER is used the little tags fly out as well. There's so many and they're so small that it'd be nearly impossible to clean them all up afterwards. This helps police to identify who used a specific TASER and when. For this reason alone it's very important that anyone who owns a TASER doesn't use it lightheartedly!

If you own a TASER and have to use it, odds are you'll leave it attached to your attacker and then try to get to safety.
