subject: Suzy Stun Gun on How Stun Guns Work [print this page] Ladies, whether you've used a stun gun personally or know someone who has one, I'm sure you've wondered at one time or another how they actually work! A stun gun is a non-lethal self-defense weapon that deters attackers using a high voltage of electricity. As soon as the prongs make contact with the attacker it immobilizes them, stopping them immediately in their tracks! And since stun guns have fairly low amperage, it won't do serious or long-term damage (though I have mixed feelings about that given who I'd be using a stun gun on).
I recently learned that stun guns are specifically made to target the nervous system of the attacker. Essentially, a stun gun floods the attacker's muscles with an intense frequency of electric pulses that keep the muscles moving rapidly, but uncontrollably. At the same time, the intense movement of the muscles actually uses up a large amount of sugar in the blood and converts it to lactic acid in the blink of an eye. Neurological impulses sent from the brain to the muscles throughout the body are interrupted at the same time. The attacker ends up losing a great deal of energy and has a hard time functioning after. Attackers hit with a stun gun end up completely disoriented and extremely confused for a few minutes after. Yet despite its effective results, a stun gun does no damage to the heart or rest of the body, making it an incredibly effective, yet non-lethal self-defense product!
Women often wonder how long they have to make contact between their stun gun and the attack in order for it to get the job done. I've found that as little as half a second of contact can stop an attacker because of the pain from the muscle contractions. If you make contact for 1-2 seconds, generally an attacker will experience uncomfortable muscle spasms and some confusion. If you are able to make 3 seconds of contact or more you will completely throw your attacker off-balance both physically and mentally. Keep in mind, 3 seconds of contact with your attacker may seem like a lifetime while he's attacking you. I want to point out, however, that everyone is different and it may take longer to stop one person than to stop another with a stun gun. I know that when I go out I keep my stun gun handy and I will stop at nothing to make sure that if anyone tries to come after me I will do whatever it takes to get away safely!
Just to set your minds at ease, I wanted to point out that the electrical pulse that travels from the stun gun to the attacker cannot pass on from the attacker to the woman holding the stun gun. The stun gun can only affect the area it makes direct contact with. Regardless of whether or not you are standing in water or wet, your attacker can not turn your stun gun against you just be touching you while being shocked! Most states allow stun guns; however, there are some restrictions in some states. If you like to stay informed like I do, you can read more about state and city restrictions on stun guns here.
I'm an incredibly cautious woman and I'm well aware of the dangers out there, which is why I always encourage my friends to carry self-defense products at all times just like I do. Whether you're running out to a book store or grabbing coffee from your favorite caf, you'd be surprised how much comfort and safety a can of mace, some pepper spray, a taser or stun gun can provide!
