subject: How Bacteria Destroys Teeth [print this page]

If people would just brush their teeth, a disease which this dentist tries to cure would be virtually eliminated. The dentist says that 28 million people in the United States suffer from advanced periodontitis or gum disease.

A lot of people will lose their healthy teeth at an early age because of this gum disease. The center for research in oral biology of the University of Washington clearly illustrated that $5 million every year is spent by Americans on dental health alone which shows that these people are greatly affected by this disease.

Interdisciplinary fighting gum disease needs research and studies in electrical engineering, medicine and dentistry. But in spite all these highly advanced research, nothing beats regular flossing and brushing of the teeth.

The bone holds the teeth through a connective tissue called collagen. Collagen acts like guy wires and anything that disturbs it leads to the loosening and possible loss of the teeth, and a primary cause of this loosening appears to be plaque.

In fact, 99 percent of plaque contains bugs or microorganisms. They induce inflammation of the gums and the supporting structure beneath. The bacteria colonizes on the surface of the teeth and without proper brushing and dental flossing they soon expand into mini states, maxi nations and join together as tooth conquerors.

But because a lot of people won't brush their teeth, the public's need for a cure increases and the research for it continues. Only this year, it was reported that a mouthwash from Europe was developed which could prevent plaque build up by killing bacteria.

The dentist said the bactericide chlorohexidine was used by the British Army in World War II to sterilize surgical equipment.

In fact, a Danish scientist found that it works as a mouthwash but it still needs a few improvements. One of the factors that should be improved is that this drug dyes the teeth black after applying it. It also causes a temporary loss of taste, he said.

The more serious effect that bactericide chlorohexidine may bring about is the risk of having cancer.

We used to take in and inject to animals drugs with the same molecular structure as bactericide chlorohexidine and now, it has been discovered to cause cancer. Now, there is another problem with the drug. It can cleanse your mouth too much.

Assuming you could kill all the bugs by sterilizing your mouth. In reality, our entire gastrointestinal tract contains bugs.

In reality, they are significant to the metabolism of the human system, to the aiding of digestion, and they produce Vitamin K.

I'm not even sure if having a drug that could destroy plaque would be a good or bad thing. I will definitely bet my money on bacteria outsmarting drugs.

Gum disease develops because people simply forget about it. If they would just brush their teeth, gum disease could be prevented. In reality, the disease could be healed. But I don't think the public will actually do something about it.
