subject: Importing A Foreign Car In The United States [print this page]

There are a wide variety of foreign cars turned up in Canada over the years, and many rare classic cars of certain manufacturers were mass exported in the 1990s. And right now, the Americans are looking forward to buy foreign cars as well.

The law states that any motor vehicle at least twenty five years old is not subject to importation limitations. All cars less than twenty five years old are subjected to scrutiny for legibility of importation by one of the processes before the car may be imported under documentation. Generally, if the car one is buying is a classic car for personal use and not for resale, there would be no real problems with importing and registering in the US. However, if one is looking forward to import a later model exotic or specialty car, either for personal use or selling/reselling, vehicle importation guidelines must be complied with, depending on the car origin and the owners nationality, in order to be a registered car owner.

As for vehicle importation guidelines if the vehicle is imported from Canada, the car less than twenty five years old must be only imported for personal use into the United States with a permanent basis from Canada. This process may also be followed if the car was originally imported from Canada on a temporary basis, or prior if DOT or US Customs clearance was not acquired.

As for the importation guidelines for vehicles imported from other countries, the car to be imported must comply with the standards of the country of origin, aside from the United States or Canada. One must file form HS-7, which is available upon entry to the US, and also declare if the car fulfills DOT requirements. As a general rule, like all foreign vehicles used car dealers Orange County houses in, cars less than twenty five years old must comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards to be imported permanently.

On temporary importations, as a general rule, all cars imported into the US that are less than twenty five years old must comply with all federal motor vehicle safety standard, which used car dealers Orange County follows, or be brought into compliance by a registered importer, along with an approve HS-7.

As for the vehicle of a non-resident in the United States registered in another country may be imported for personal use for a period not exceeding a year of validity. Used car dealers Orange Country houses in and the like are also under this regulation. The car cannot be sold and must be exported within the year of validity.
