Nokia has recently added a new member to its entertainment-centred X Series line of mobile phones, the X5. The new Nokia X5 wears a somewhat unusual square shape and comes with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, a 5 megapixel camera, 3G network connectivity and 32 GB storage capacity.

Display and storage features

The almost-square X5 is reminiscent of the iconic MiniDisc player in appearance and design. It has stunning audio fidelity, dedicated music keys, speakerphones and provides access to Ovi Music for direct music download.

The X5 comes with a 2.36-inch TFT display which supports up to 256K colour at 320 x 240 pixels resolution. It features an accelerometer sensor which automatically rotates the graphic interface to adapt to the phones orientation, as well as a proximity sensor which automatically turns off screen features when not in use.

The Nokia X5 handset is shipped with 200 MB onboard internal memory and comes with a microSD external expansion card slot to increase the phones storage memory up to 32 GB.

A 2 GB expansion card is bundled free with the phone package upon purchase.

Connectivity options and social networks access

The X5 slider handset provides straight-out-of-the-box support for all Instant Messaging and Webmail services like Yahoo and Gmail, and enables fast access to popular social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Hi5.

The new X5 runs a Symbian OS v9.3 with a Series 60 v3.2 User Interface, and is powered by a zippy and efficient 600 MHz ARM 11 mobile CPU. The device has both quad band 2G GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz as well as tri-band 3G HSDPA 900/1900/2100 MHz network connectivity for global roaming.

The Nokia X5 has both Class 32 EDGE and GPRS network connectivity. Additional connectivity is provided through Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g for internet hotspot access, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP for data transfers to and from other compatible devices and microUSB port for wired connectivity with personal computers and laptops.

Music-intensive mobile phone

Advertised as a music-intensive mobile phone, the X5 comes equipped with an all-round multimedia player that can support MP3, WMA, WAV and eAAC+ audio files as well as MP4, H.264 and H.263 video files.

You can listen to calls and music through the handsets built-in speakerphone, or you can use the 3.5 mm audio jack to plug in your favourite headphone for private listening.

Preserving memorable events just got easier with the digital camera thats included with the X5. The 5 megapixel snapper comes with an LED flash and displays images at 2592 x 1944 pixels resolution. It can also record VGA-quality video at 15 frames per second.

One very useful feature on the Nokia X5 is the ambient light sensor which automatically activates or deactivates the keypads backlight, determining whether the backlight needs to come on under the prevailing light condition or not. By turning the keypad light on only when absolutely necessary, youll have a great way to save on the phones battery life.
