subject: What is Mother of Pearl and Organic Pearl Jewelry [print this page]

Mother of pearl is the nacre (tiny irritant substance) that enters the mollusk for the pearl formation. Pearl starts formation when an irritant substance enters the mollusk. Nacre is a rich source of minerals and skins the constituent part with layer after layer during the excretion of the material that later forms as pearl. The quality of a pearl during formation is affected by the thickness of the nacre. During the formation of a pearl, the shell acts as a protection layer from external objects and animals from damaging or consuming the pearl.

In both the natural and cultured pearl formations, the nacre gets inserted. In the natural pearls, the nacre gets into the mollusk through a natural process where as in the cultured pearl production, this tiny material (sand particle in most cases) is injected artificially (by man) into the mollusk for the pearl to take form.

Organic Jewelry: With the mother of pearl itself jewelry ornaments can be made and this jewelry is called the organic jewelry. These type of jewelry and ornaments were once in wide usage during the ancient days. Irganix jewelry contains shells, mother of pearl, plants and other natural and organic materials, natural pearls in the design and making of the jewelry. In the modern world, today we do not find any organic jewelry existing around in the market. This was once a tradition to wear the organic pearl necklaces and jewelry during weddings. Compared to the pricing of the most other modern pearl jewelry, organic jewelry is expensive and very rare.
