While some call it the PS3 Modchip, or PS3 Jailbreak, it doesn't matter, because the features are what count. It consists of a USB dongle that needs to always be inserted into your PS3 console and then it will let you install games to your PS3 hard drive and also load the games from the PS3 hard drive as well.
It works, or rather, installs, just like the USB modchip for the PS2. No wiring, and no soldering. While the USB mod for the Playstation 2 was somewhat limited in what it could do, the PS Jailbreak is not.
The PS Jailbreak for all intents and purposes works the same way, at least as far as installation goes, as the ps2 modchip did. A quick plug in of the USB dongle gets your Playstation3 ready. And then another USB flash drive so that you can then install your homebrew games and applications, and most importantly, your Backup manager.
A good number of PS3 owners believed that a PS3 modchip was just not possible, that the PS3 was just not open and unable to be modified, let alone have a product that actually worked.
What is shocking to myself at least, is that absolutely no wiring is needed. A simply USB Dongle is all you need, and not any technical skills.
Most modchips for any other consoles, certainly first generation modchips, always required installation by way of solder anywhere from 10 - 40 wires internally on to the main board of the game system. Thankfully you don't have to worry about this with the PS Jailbreak at all. Just plug it in and play. You just need to plug the PS Jailbreak into the USB port and that is all there is to it.
Along with the USB Dongle, you also get the included backup manager software, and this piece of software is what does the work once the dongle is plugged in. Once you've plugged in the PS3 modchip, you then have to install the Backup Manager. It will show up as a new icon under your GAMES menu.
Once the backup manager is installed on to the menu of the PS3, any time you insert a game disc, it will ask you if you wish to install it on to the PS3 hard drive. Once selected, you can see the progress bar as your game is being installed on the Playstation 3 hard drive.
How long will it take to install your games to the intermal hard drive? Well, that seems to depend on the game, but I've not yet run accross one that took more than 7 minutes. It's interesting to note that the games do NOT take up 25GB each, some games are only 2 or 3 GB in total.
And this is where the fun part starts. After your game is installed just go back into the backup manager and pick the game you want to play. Load it up and you're good to go. Now all you have to do is simply press the X button on the controller and start your game.
It's faster to play games from the internal hard drive because there's virtually no load times. I'm honestly finding that games load about 10 to 20 times faster from the hard drive, then the disc itself. You'll also notice that there is almost NO load time during the game, between levels and such.
If you have a Playstation3, then this PS Jailbreak is definitely for you. It allows you to game faster, but also protects your expensive game collection from scratches or damage that you would have during regular use.
