What are those white spotty areas on the tongue and inside the mouth? At quick glance these patches are similar to cottage cheese or milk curds. After careful examination, dentists and physicians are able to diagnosis these white patchy areas as thrush.

Thrush is a mouth infection that is caused by a ferment called as candida. Candida fungus is famous to be address as yeast. Everybody contain a small amount of candida fungus within their body; however, thrush exists when the candida fungus grows out of control, which causes the initial infection. Thrush looks as white, raised cuts in the mouth and on the tongue. Sometimes thrush can also appear on the roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils, and the back of the throat. These lesions resemble cottage cheese and are very painful when touched or something like a toothbrush is rubbed against them. These lesions also bleed easily when scraped. Symptoms of thrush also include pain and/or difficulty swallowing, feeling of something stuck in the throat, and fever if the infection has spread to other parts of the body.

Thrush can be able to affect people of all ages, male and female. However, thrush infection is more prevalent in babies and toddlers. The disease of thrush in babies and toddlers is often misunderstood because the white patchy areas in the mouth and on the tongue look alike to milk or formula. Additionally, babies and toddlers do not have the functions to explain to their parents and/or caregivers that they are not feeling well or that something hurts. Parents and caregivers usually become alarmed and realize that something is wrong when they try to wipe the white patches off the mouth and they will not come off easily. This patchy is sensitive, if rubbed to hard, the patchy may bleed. Babies and toddlers suffering from thrush symptoms may also have a poor appetite. Thrush leads the mouth and tongue to be hurt, thus making difficult for a baby or toddler to eat and drink. Thrush also causes hard time in swallowing, so if a baby or toddler has thrush their appetite may be depreciate due to the pain that they are suffering when they are trying to swallow. Thrush may be the reason, if a baby is suffering from diaper rash. Since thrush is caused by an abundance of the candida fungus which is typically known as yeast, the infection can get into the body and will eventually reach the child's bowls which will cause a diaper rash.

Thrush in adults is comparable to that in babies and toddlers; nevertheless, there are some additional signs and symptoms to be on the watch for that may be pointing to thrush or the start of another oral health problem. At the beginning of thrush, most adults may have a burning sensation within their mouth and throat. This burning feeling is commonly begins with thrush infection before any visual signs of thrush are visible. As the thrush infection worsens, then the white patchy areas will become visible on the mouth and tongue.

These areas are commonly surrounded by tissue which is red, raw, and very painful. These locations also bleed quickly if they are rubbed, especially while doing oral care. Thrush also followed with bad taste in the mouth and most adults say that thrush make them think of them of having cotton inside their mouth.
