subject: Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection [print this page] Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is the latest and, to date, the most successful micromanipulation technique used for the treatment of male factor infertility. The procedure entails the mechanical insertion of a single spermatozoon directly into the cytoplasm of an oocyte. ICSI fertilization was reported in 1988 using human gametes, however, there were no reports of pregnancies until July 1992 (Palermo et al. 1992). Since then, there have been ICSI pregnancy rates comparable to conventional In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
This technique is now employed for patients with
* Severe male factor infertility like Azoospermia or Severe Oligospermia
* Severe endometriosis,
* Polycystic ovarian diseases not responding to conventional treatments.
* Unexplained infertility
* Previous failed IVFs.

Embryo Cryopreservation
Frequently, when a woman's ovaries are stimulated to increase the number of eggs that can be retrieved, many eggs are obtained. When all of these eggs are exposed to sperm, many embryos may be created. Only a few embryos can be placed in the woman's uterus at one time in order to reduce the risk of multiple births. By using the process of cryopreservation, extra embryos are frozen and stored for later use.
