subject: Home Security Tips For When You Will Be Teaching Abroad [print this page]

It has become a growing trend for recent graduates to go abroad for a couple months or a year in order to teach English. It is a great cultural experience, gives you a way to save money and experience a life very different from your own. No matter how old you are or where you are in your life, it can be incredibly liberating to just up and move to another country and get paid to do so. The issue is that you can not leave your house unattended for such a long period of time and even if you have gotten someone trustworthy to look after it while you are gone, you need to make sure that you take a few added home security precautions in order to make sure that your house remains in order and that nobody disturbs your belongings. Follow these simple tips in order to feel good about going abroad.

For starters, be sure to sublet your apartment to someone that you know and trust. Not only will this help you out financially as rent will be taken care of while you are away, but you will also rest easy knowing that there is someone that you trust taking care of your space and being respectful of all of your stuff. Your home security depends on the level of trust that you have with the person staying in your home as they will be presiding over the place while you are gone so make sure that they are attentive and vigilant about maintaining a secure home.

Be sure to install a home alarm system if you dont already have one and speak to your friend or family member about the importance of activating the alarm at all times. It is imperative that they lock the doors and windows at all times and that they only let guests into the home that they know and trust. It is your home after all, and you will be returning to it so you want to make sure that the address has not been given out to strangers and that everything is left as it was.

Lastly, if the person presiding over your house decides to take a vacation or leave the home for more than a couple of days, it is important that you both come to an agreement as to who you can trust to come in and check on the place while the two of you are away. For home security reasons, it is important that you make it seem as if someone is in the home as an empty house is more vulnerable to theft and forced entry so be sure to leave a light on in the living room or to make sure that the house seems like there is activity in it by collecting the mail and having someone look after the yard until one of you returns.
