subject: Correct Golf Downswing Drills [print this page] Your swing can break down many different waysYour swing can break down many different ways. Near the top of the list is by failing to perform a correct downswing. Of course, the number one way that people ruin their swing is due to an incorrect setup (grip, foot width, alignment, posture, stance). Nonetheless, after setup, coming in a noted second for causing ugly and ineffective swings is the downswing gone haywire. And when it comes to stinking down swing motions, the winning category for causing the most dysfunctional down swings is a poor transition into from the top of the backswing.
With that said, there is no worse transition than the move the causes the horrifying over the top move. This comes from the natural reaction that an untrained golfer would have to begin his downswing with his arms & hands throwing the club at the ball. Instead, the correct transition move from the top of the back swing is with your lower body and hips. The weight shift with the lower body begins the club rotating around your body in correct fashion. The club accelerates until the clubs comes to about your hip level and your arms and hands release through the ball.
Now there are other ways for tings for go bad on the club's way down to strike the golf ball, but the above mentioned is at the top of the list. Other noted problems, however, are under and overactive hips, a wandering elbow, and poor weight shift.
Luckily, these bad habits can usually be solved with drills and training aids aimed at your particular trouble area. An example of one such tried and true drill is focusing on bringing your elbow back to your side on the way down to prevent the over the top move. Many golfers have worn out this drill on the road to a better swing. But if you need another drill to help you, I have fifteen others that you can take for a spin. That is correct, fifteen. One has to be the answer to your problems.
