subject: Britain Set To Welcome Home Paralympics [print this page]

Nearly sixty two years ago the Paralympics was born in Great Britain and now, in less than two years time, it is due to come back home to Great Britain. The return of the Games is thought to be extremely monumental and really show off the talent that British Paralympic athletes possess.

There is an exceptional record of success in British Paralympics and a host of rising athletic stars across many different fields ensures future success. Lots of high profile paralympic athletes have discussed their desire to be a success in great detail recently. The drive and ambition seems even more dedicated due to the games being held at home in London.

Former British Paralympic champion Tanni Grey Thompson has suggested that, "It is about legacy," "It is about showing what disabled athletes can do - getting away from the 'Ah bless them, aren't they marvellous' attitude.' Disabled people are still more likely to experience discrimination at all levels, whether it's work, affordable housing or whatever. The Games can help make people think differently - help them see that everyone fits in somewhere in life and disabled people are not all crammed together into a far corner."

1.6 million people have signed up to receive tickets already for the Olympics and Paralympics games and the London site has began to look more and more developed recently too.

Back in 1948 the first Paralympic Games competition was held in Britain and the British squad have continued to be highly successful in their medal attempts ever since. The Barcelona games in 1992 were a massive achievement for the British paralympic squad.

Training programmes for the 2012 Paralympics are already underway and the British team are hoping to make a serious attempt at gaining some medals.

Record numbers of people are expected to be watching the games both in London and from the comfort of their homes thanks to the coverage on channel four.
