The game of Tetris is a well-known utility of tetrominoes, which is the 4-element unique case of polyominoes. The polyominoes have been utilized in well-known puzzles ever since at least 1907, and the term is given by Solomon W. Golomb in year 1953. On the other hand, even the account of pentominoes is dated to the ancient times.

In a study conducted by Dr. Richard Haier, playing a game like Tetris may very well lead to more effective brain activity. It has been confirmed that brain function and activity increases with higher use of cerebral energy, calculated by looking at the glucose metabolic rate. As players get better at playing the game, their brains start using less glucose over time showing the more effective brain activity while playing. With regular playing of Tetris it was noted that there was an enhancement of general cognitive tasks including reasoning, language, processing and critical thinking and overall boosts of the cerebral cortex thickness.

It is believed that the game of Tetris may interrupt the memories that are preserved of the sounds and sights observed at the time. And, these are later experienced again through distressing, involuntary flashbacks of the moment.

As with all other games where you have to solve puzzles in similar ways, you may have a recurrent stree pattern in your brain which unwillingly brings up the Tetris arrangements even if you are not playing. This can however occur with any kind of computer game and even with such things as jigsaw puzzles.

There are many other games that can also have the same result and give your brain a good workout. If you come across game sites on the internet it is always a good idea to look for the puzzle games or strategy games. These are normally games that you can play when you have a few minutes to kill and they all work your brain in a positive way.
