subject: Your New Ballet Leotard [print this page]

If you are just starting to learn ballet then you may have been told by your teacher that you are required to wear a ballet leotard and this may leave some of you filled with dread, especially if you have not worn one before. However, once you know how to properly wear one there will be no need to worry.

Professional ballet dancers have worn leotards in the dance studio for many years as they enable dancers to move around the floor more freely and with great ease. Dancers sometimes coordinate with additional items such as wrap-around skirts, leg warmers and dance sweaters. Leotards come in many different styles and their colours, cuts and fabrics vary wildly. Differences can be seen in necklines, sleeve lengths and even the cut of the legs. In fact, just as other clothing trends change and alter, so do ballet leotards. The only thing that doesn't change is how they should be worn.

How to Wear Your Ballet Leotard

It is important that you wear underwear that cannot be seen under your leotard such as a G-string. Some people choose to wear no underwear at all, and as long as you wash it after each use, this is fine.

Put on your tights or leggings by placing one leg at a time into the legs of the tights or leggings. Make sure they are pulled up to the waistline and adjust the fabric to make sure they fit properly and are nice and comfortable.

The next step is to stand and hold your ballet leotard so that the back of it is facing you and so that the front of the leotard is facing out. You then need to stoop over and put your right leg through the neck hole and then out through the hole for the right leg. While still stooping, do the same with your left leg. You can then straighten up, and as you stand straight, pull the leotard up to your midriff. Adjust the leotard around your buttock area so that it is well fitted and comfortable. Put the leotard past your midriff area and up to your chest. You can then put your arms into the correct armholes and pull the leotard the rest of the way up, ensuring that the neckline is around the neck.

Let's Dance!

It is important to ensure that your ballet leotard fits properly and is totally comfortable. Trying to dance in an ill-fitting ballet leotard can mean you will fail to get the best out of yourself when trying to improve your ballet moves.

Now that you know how to sport a ballet leotard, hopefully you feel confident enough to buy one and show it off. There are numerous online companies and professional dancewear retailers selling the item online and they should offer you a fantastic choice of attractive and affordable leotards. With your leotard you might want to wear ballet shoes or slippers and these can additionally be bought in various online stores.
