subject: The Nokia X5 Can Hold Its Own In The Messaging And Multimedia Department [print this page]

Nokia has a reputation of coming up with mobile phones that are designed a bit differently out of the usual, and the Nokia X5 is the newest addition in the X Series with a quirky look. Because of its unconventional design, the phone as well as its user is bound to catch some attention. But a unique appearance is not enough to guarantee saleability; the device has to be supported by some amount of substance.

Slide-out keyboard

With an almost square frame, a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, and a variety of cheerful colours, the X5-01 is a unique handset that deserves to be seen up close. The phone is optimised for messaging but leans a bit towards the music side to appeal to the younger consumers. Despite its unusual design, the phone is quite easy to handle particularly when you need to type long messages.

The keys are neatly packed close together with no space between them, However, the keys are somewhat rounded on top to help ensure fast but precise typing of messages. The phones primary screen comes with a 2.36-inch TFT display supporting up to 256,000 colours at 320 x 240 pixels resolution. The Nokia X5 features an accelerometer sensor so the user interface can automatically adapt to the phones orientation, whether in horizontal or portrait mode.

The phones square chassis is easily distinguished; even if the X5 is not exactly square. The X5 has a dimension of 74.3 x 66.4 x 16.9 mm and weighs 129 g. With these measurements, the phone will certainly appear bulky. However, the reason for appearing thick is because of the phones slide-out full QWERTY keyboard which provides fast and convenient text entry.

Multimedia-rich features

Touted as being a music-centred smartphone, the X5 comes with a versatile multimedia player that can support both MP4, H.264 and H.263 video files as well as MP3, WMA, WAV and eAAC+ audio files. You can listen to the crisp audio through the handsets built-in speakerphone or privately on a headset via the 3.5 mm audio jack.

Photo enthusiasts will truly appreciate the digital camera that comes with the Nokia X5. The 5 megapixel snapper is equipped with an LED flash and boasts 2592 x 1944 pixels image resolution. It is also capable of capturing VGA-quality video at 15 frames per second.

Easy on the eyes

Just below the earpiece is the 2.36-inch TFT display with 256,000 colours rendered at 320 x 240 pixels resolution. The phone is available in a range of vibrant colours which include Yellow Green, Azure, Pink, Graphite Black and Purple.

It doesnt matter if youre using the device in bright sunlight or total darkness.

Present in many Nokia phones, the ambient light sensor allows the Nokia X5 to automatically adjust the keypads backlight, deciding whether the prevailing lighting condition will need the keypad light to be used or not. This is a great way to save on the phones battery life, by turning the keypad light on only when absolutely necessary.
