The Garden Caf is closed on the first Monday of each month but is open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm; lunch is served from 12pm until 3pm.
The Garden Museum was founded in 1977 and over the past three decades a unique collection has built up thanks to ongoing donations, purchases and bequests. Today the Museum holds over 9000 objects, each one of which in some way represents British gardens and gardening. The collection covers the subject in its broadest sense and demonstrates both the ingenuity and the continuity of gardening over the centuries.
Objects on display range from specialist equipment made for grand country estates to improvised tools put together by enthusiasts in their own back gardens. The earliest objects on display include ceramics that were made several hundred years ago. The Victorian and Edwardian periods are particularly well represented in the collection, whilst there are also some great examples of gardening dating back to the 1950's.
The Museum garden provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, and is very much appreciated by local office workers who enjoy a welcome lunch-break in the beautiful environment. Thanks to a microclimate, Bananas, oleander and olive thrive in the garden. The garden is currently home to their artist in residence, Charlotte Verity, who is using the garden as her inspiration for an exhibition in 2011.
