subject: Vitamin D Deficiency And Its Symptoms In Adults [print this page]

In my continued study of sunlight and its benefits, I've been doing a lot of reading about vitamin d deficiency symptoms in adults. Sunlight, as most know, is one of the main contributing factors to vitamin d production in the human body, and an underexposure to sunlight, as well as other factors can cause vitamin d deficiency in adults.

Vitamin d has been called the "Sunshine Vitamin" but sunlight by itself isn't the only contributor to vitamin d synthesis in the body. Milk is also a main contributor to vitamin d in the body. That is the reason why most of the gallons of milk you see in a grocery store are called Vitamin D Milk. Those who suffer from lactose allergies and who also live in areas of low sun exposure are particularly at risk to vitamin d deficiency. The symptoms of vitamin d deficiency are somewhat different in adults than in children, or are at least more difficult to identify because of some of the similarities of symptoms that can occur in children from other things. A particular example of vitamin d deficiency is general muscle weakness and also a pain in the bones. This can make it particularly difficult to identify in children due to the fact that bone pain is usually associated with growth spirts, as well as muscle fatigue and other things.

Fortunately, in a lot of cases, a vitamin d deficiency can be corrected simply by exposing yourself to more direct sunlight. This isn't always possible though, so in many cases, other steps may need to be taken. You often find that with vegetarian diets, vitamin d deficiency can take hold, and many times supplements are needed in order to restore balance. The three biggest risk factors associated with vitamin d deficiency are: Persons Underexposed to Sunlight, Persons Unable to Process Milk Products, and Persons on Strict Vegetarian Diets.

If you are a person in one or more of these categories and you can correct the problem, do so immediately. If you aren't able to fix the problem, then you may have to use a vitamin d supplement in your diet. A deficiency in vitamin d, in an extreme case, can cause a large range of very dangerous health conditions, things like rickets disease and osteomalacia.

Vitamin deficiency in general, is one of the root cause of much of the symptoms of fatigue, weakness, and general lack of health experienced throughout the world. Having lived in the third world for an extended period of time, I had personal experience with a wide variety of vitamin deficiency in both myself and friends. It's no secret that in the modern world, though types of foods and choices for diets abound, in many cases, the quality of the food being produced has greatly diminished. Due to under-fertilization methods that only replenish a portion of the chemicals needed for healthy plant growth, many vegetables, fruits, and meats produced by corporate farming have shown a pretty heavy decline in the amounts of vitamins and minerals they supply. A person may think they're eating a balanced diet, but if they're not careful, many of the essential vitamins and minerals the body needs may be absent from the foods we regularly eat.
