Electronic cigarettes are the healthy alternative to a traditional cigarette, as well as an effective way to stop smoking. Introduced in Europe in 2006, this device offers the feel and taste of a cigarette without the health risks associated with smoking the traditional way.

Many electronic cigarettes look like the real thing. They consist of a mouthpiece or cartridge, a heating element or atomizer and a rechargeable battery with electronics. Usually, when a person takes a draw a vacuum switch is activated which heats the element which then vaporizes the nicotine or non-nicotine solution. They can usually be recharged using just a simple wall charger.

The health risks of smoking a cigarette are well documented. Tobacco has many dangers, especially when smoked. A cigarette's smoke contains a staggering minimum of 19 carcinogens. Eliminating the tobacco and smoke of the traditional cigarette will drastically reduce the health risks associated with this habit.

In addition to the health benefits from no longer smoking traditionally, there are also social ones. The smell of smoke gets into everything; hair, clothing and cars. No item that is exposed to a cigarettes smoke leaves without some lingering attachment. Since the water vapor used in this new style of cigarette replaces the smoke from tobacco there is no smell.

Without needing fire to burn the tobacco and with no noticeable smoke, this new advancement allows smokers to smoke in places that would otherwise not be permitted. Smoking on airplanes, in hospitals and at work, unless there are specific regulations against it, is now risk free.

Because the electronic cigarette offers a choice in strengths of nicotine some people choose to use them as a smoking cessation method, rather than going cold turkey. Cartridges are available with no nicotine all the way up to extra high doses of nicotine. It is possible for some people to slowly decrease the dose of nicotine they are getting. This, in some ways, acts like a nicotine lozenge or gum. If the person lessons their nicotine intake it makes them less dependent upon it without having to give up the enjoyment and satisfaction of a smoke. The hand to mouth habit that is formed with smoking is sometimes harder to break than actual physical dependence upon nicotine.

A lot has changed over the years for the cigarette. It has gone from hottest fashion trend to discriminating against health hazard. This is the modern way to smoke. It removed the majority of health and social concerns associated with the traditional cigarette while still allowing the smoker the satisfaction of a calming smoke.
