subject: How To Take Care Of Your Mattress [print this page]

If you have found the perfect mattress for you, see to it that you take care of it so you can prolong its life. Some people complain of mattress depressions and sagging which contributes to the development of back pains.

Also, getting a new mattress is expensive. The good ones can cost more than a thousand bucks. So if you want to make sure you put off buying a new mattress for long, here are some tips for you to following taking care of your mattress:

A good upholstery cleaner can remove the spots and stains that are scattered all over your mattress. If your mattress has not been cleaned up for a long time, it will be a good idea to set aside a day for this task alone. Chances are the stains have hardened already and would not be easy to remove.

Some owners air this mattress out every single day. Why? This is to reduce the likelihood of the mattress accumulating molds inside. While doing your daily cleaning work, you can put this on a platform in front of your garage and let the sun beat down on it and remove any micro organisms that might be thriving inside. If everyday proves to be too much work for you, you can opt to do this during weekends only. If it is too heavy for you, you can always vacuum it and just air it out once a month.

To help the new sleep system complete this adjustment to personal needs, the sleep set needs to be maintained. This settling of materials can be evened out by turning and flipping the mattress on a regular basis. It is recommended that the mattress is alternately turned and flipped once every two weeks for the first three months, and then twice per year after that. The foundation should also be turned every 12 months.

Do not eat and drink on your bed. This is tempting to do on a lazy day when you are watching television in your room or reading a book. But this is a memory foam bed we are talking about and I am sure you did not just spend heaps of money on it just to ruin it. So eat and drink on the sofa instead.

You should also purchase some kind of cover to protect your mattress. This doesn't have to be a tacky plastic wrapping. Instead, buy a soft cotton cover that is easily washable in a machine. This additional layer of protection will help keep your mattress free of stains for as long as you own it. That's important if you ever think about reselling your mattress to generate funds for purchasing a new one. You may also want to consider buying a foam or latex pad. This will make your mattress much more comfortable while also doing wonders to keep the surface clean.

Flip the mattress or rotate it twice a year. I know there are a lot of mattress brands that have no-flip features but it will still help your bed if it wears out evenly. Plus, there is nothing wrong with flipping it over. This will ensure that one side does not sag.

To maintain our mattress we should clean it about once a quarter. The Mattress should be stripped completely and all the linens should be washed including the mattress pad. If your pillows have removable covers they too should be washed. Make sure to read the manufacturers label for information on how.

Now you will want to lay a clean tarp or painter's plastic on the floor and have someone help you stand the mattress upright against the wall. Fill the water bottle with one half cup white vinegar and one half cup of water. Then spray the mixture evenly on the mattress. You can then wipe the mattress down with a clean cloth. Now fill the other spray bottle with only warm water and spray another even layer on the mattress. Again wipe off any excess water with a cloth. Then turn your mattress on the other side and repeat the process.
