Having recieved a record 13 nominations , Gaga was thrilled to win 7 trophies for "Bad Romance" and one for "Telephone"
The 24 year old singer was in tears as she picked up her award from Cher at the end of the evening, later saying she was ver nervous and did not want to let down her fans.
Other performers at the awards included deadmau5, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Ke$ha, Eminem,Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Kanye West, Usher, Trey Songz, Linkin Park, B.o.B, Paramore and Florence and the Machine.
During her acceptance speech for Video of the Year Lady Gaga revealed her next album is to be called "Born this way" and she performed a section of the title track.
It has been a busy few days for Gaga as she had been involved in a court action concerning money she was alleged to have owed to a former producer.
legal action was being taken against her by Rob Fusar, who is credited on her album "The Fame"
Fusar was asking for $30.5 Million as he believed he had been denied song royalties and merchandise revenue, but Gaga contested this and counter-sued on the basis that she believed the early agreement with Fusar was illegal.
New York County Court considered both actions but dismissed them both.
