subject: How Dangerous is the Internet For Children? [print this page]

Most children will tell their parents that they are not really doing anything online that could put them in danger. The fact of the matter is, however, even if they are not looking for danger themselves, danger is often looking for them. If most parents knew the number of predators that were present on the social networks and in chat rooms, they would probably never have a computer in their home in the first place. The unfortunate thing is, however, computers are an integrated part of our lives, we just need to know how to work them responsibly.

It all boils down to the amount of education that you have on this new technology. Many of us are familiar with the computer and we may use the Internet at work but we may not be using it in the same way as our child. It may be necessary for you to increase your knowledge of the online world and to familiarize yourself with the places where your children tend to congregate. This can make it easier for you to understand the language that is being spoken between children, both online and off-line.

Another thing that you need to be cautious of is your child's Internet usage on non-computer devices, such as the cell phone. Even if they are not connecting with dangerous individuals through the cell phone, they can still be easily taking part in things that you would not approve of. Familiarize yourself with the use of the cell phone as well and you will be doing what is necessary to protect your child from danger.
