The Graduate Record Examination popularly known as GRE is a standardized test that is required at many graduate schools in the United States Of America and in other English speaking countries as well. The exam focuses on verbal reasoning,quantitative reasoning,critical thinking and analytical writing skills. More than 600,000 graduate students from almost 230 countries take the GRE general test. It is required for all post-graduate courses, except law, medicine and management. In the recent times, there has been a lot of debate regarding the parameters of the GRE test, claiming it to be very rigid, thereby ETS responded by announcing their "new plan" in the year 2006 to re-design the test-structure by the year 2007.
In the states and Canada, the costing involved in the general test is US$160 as of the month march,2010, although ETS will reduce the fee, but under certain circumstances.
As already mentioned earlier in the article, GRE has three important parts already, which are the :-
1. Verbal Section :- This section generally consists of analogies, passages. There are multiple choice response sections as well which are graded on a scale of 200 to 800. This section tests vocabulary, in a typical examination, this section may consist of 30 questions.
2. Quantitative Section:- In a typical test, this section may consist of 28 questions, this section generally comprises of quantitative comparison questions, discrete quantitative questions and data interpretation questions as well.
3. Analytical Writing Section :- This section consists of two different aspects, one being the 'issue task' and the other being the 'argument task'. Each essay is scored by at least two readers on a six-point 'holistic' scale.
There is another section called "The experimental section". This section does not appear on all GRE examinations.
