It does matter whether you are Internet Marketing or marketing in a bricks and mortar business, you can use similar tools for marketing your business. We are strong believers that Twitter is an extremely successful way to grow your business. And we've developed a series of videos to assist you to be successful.

The key to business marketing success is to "know your market who are you competing with!"

Using Twitter is very simple we talk about the basics in another article. Just search under authors name for me and you will find it. Just as understanding your niche is vital, so identifying the key players in your niche is the next very important step.

Find out through Google search who are the self styled masters of your niche. Also, use SearchTwitter.com to find them they are the ones with the largest followings.

We identify these experts and start following their followers. Start following those at the top of a key player's list. As a general rule, those at the top of the list are often the most active tweeters. You want to attract tweeters who are active as they are the most likely to help in monetizing your following.

A key benefit of following an expert is if you can get them to send you what is known as an "@message". These are really cool.

What you try to do is get them to send you a tweet with @username at the beginning of it, where username is your Twitter name. The message is understood to be for the particular person BUT it goes to ALL OF THEIR FOLLOWERS. So they all see your username!

How do you get a niche expert to send you an @message?

To get an @message from a niche expert can be difficult as they will be receiving many @messages. You need to get them to reply to yours!

We have found the best way is to go through their recent tweets and get a feel for their pet thoughts, products and ideas. Send them a tweet on something that appears to be important to them and there is a good chance they'll reply to your @message. Appeal to their vanity, ego is a great thing to stroke!

Scan the niche expert's tweets they will tell you a lot about the person. For example, if there aren't any @messages they probably don't interact with their followers very much.

AND, above all else, always respond to the tweets you receive!

We mean all tweets not just the @messages or direct tweets. Regularly check your account and if there are any messages specifically directed at you, make sure you respond.

You need to engage with your followers and create the impression you are committed to interaction. If you are seen to engage with your followers they will respond to your tweets. That leads to great relationships on Twitter, trust and then sales.

Initiate conversations with your followers by sending them @messages. Look to provide answers to questions that other people ask. Relevance and value are the keys to building your following and maximizing their responsiveness. With this comes influence and influential posts mean more followers!

How do you know when you are making progress? Like everything on the web, some clever person has developed a tool to tell you. Twitterank.com works out a score for each Twitter user showing how engaged, interesting and influential they are.
