subject: Pet Ferret Care - Keeping Your Pet Ferret Safe [print this page]

If you're reading this, this is most likely your first pet ferret, in which case, congratulations on your wonderful choice. Few pets are as smart or as interesting as the ferret. You're probably used to hearing the responsibility speech that goes alongside owning a pet, and you're already doing your part by learning, so I'll spare you.

One of the first things you should do once you get a pet ferret is check up on its medical history. Make sure it has the required vaccinations. This is especially important for kits as distemper is so deadly if contracted.

Ferrets try to get into everything, but if you have only a few things in the area available to them, you are far less likely to be surprised. A ferret can get hurt on many things you wouldn't expect, so set up an area for them with only the essentials (for ferrets, we'll consider toys essential).

The ferret's flexible skeletal system is what makes them renowned escape artists.

That last tidbit was so you don't get taken by surprise when you no-doubt let them out to play and exercise. Some ferret owners like to walk their ferrets. You do need a ferret harness for this, but your ferret will enjoy it greatly once he or she is used to it.

You want to feed your pet ferret a very specific diet. You might think you are being good to your ferret by giving them table scraps, but don't. They can't process any fiber they get. They don't do very well with large amounts of carbohydrates either, their diet should consist mostly of fat and protein. You can get ferret food at some pet superstores or online.

Aim to spend at least 30 minutes per day playing with your ferret, and always keep an eye out for details and changes in behavior. The sooner you notice any changes and get them checked out, the safer your pet will be. As long as you're watching out for your fuzzy friend, it will live a long, happy life with you.
