Although nobody seems to be absolutely sure about what percentage of our body heat is lost through the top of our heads, the general consensus of opinion is that it is certainly not an unappreciable amount. When you consider that heat rises, that is hardly very surprising, and yet what is, is that so few people actually do anything to keep the heat in. We pile on layers and layers of clothing around other parts of our bodies, making ourselves look bulky and shapeless in the colder months, but fail to protect the area where most of the heat is escaping.

One of the main reasons why many women are understandably reluctant to invest in winter headgear is simply because hats just are not everyone's thing. Some women just seem to be able to throw on any old hat and it looks gorgeous, while probably the majority can spend months even trying to find a dress hat that suits them for a special occasion.

Winter hats in particular can often be a woman's worst nightmare because the tight-fitting woolen varieties especially play havoc with hairstyles. Even if the hat itself looks good, when you take it off, you can be left for the rest of the day with a flattened, lifeless mop which, even if your hair is freshly washed, still manages to look greasy.

So, how can you keep all that wasted heat in without suffering the bad hair days and while still retaining a look of chic sophistication? With a stunning hand-painted silk scarf!

First of all, why silk when there are so many other natural and manmade fabrics to choose from? Think about the linings of the finest quality jackets and gloves. What are they made from? That's right, silk and the reason for this is because silk has some of the most amazing properties in relation to temperature. Not only is it wonderfully cool in the summer, but it is also one of the warmest fabrics there is and so is perfect for the winter. Even aviator jackets are lined with silk, not only to prevent them from chafing, but also to protect pilots from the extremes of cold when they are up in the air.

Silk is, of course, an extremely light material too, which means that it will not crush and spoil the perfect hairdo either. You only need to wrap a long silk scarf lightly around your head to get all the benefits of the warmth and there are literally dozens of fashionable styles that you can wear it in.

One of the loveliest things about silk scarves though, and particularly those which are hand painted with unique designs, is that they are not only extremely practical, but they scream luxury and elegance. Think Grace Kelly and her inimitable style and sophistication. Would you rather turn up to work or an evening event or even stroll around the park la Grace or looking like somebody's grandma in a woolen hat? With a fabulous silk scarf, you will still look like a lady, but you'll never be left out in the cold.
