University of illinois Clothing and Apparel

Maybe you're not one of those people who feels like they have to tell their whole story with their clothes. Still I think if you've attended a Big Ten school like the University of Illinois, you should possess a few articles of Fighting Illini apparel to at least prove you've been somewhere on this little space rock we call a home. It doesn't tell the whole story, but it hints at some of the stuff that you yourself may have forgotten.

Any little thing can jog a memory: a sweatshirt, some running shorts, a lived-in tee. Sure you're gonna be around a lot of people who already know you go to school, or went to school, because guess what? so did they. But! Maybe your wearing of that hoodie will trigger some important memory in someone else, like the last weekend before summer. Or what they got a degree in.

And also, think about it this way: that shirt is going to be a good partner to you years later in all those hours of painting the walls of a new house, or mowing the new lawn, or wrapping around your finger the first time a woodworking project goes awry, or wrapping your first child in when you suddenly have forgotten to buy diapers? The destiny of that shirt is written in its first wearing.

For my money, I have always enjoyed those people whose every article of clothing carries the school logo. The big "I" or the orange and blue or simply the name of the state wherein we all reside, like a simple truth. No I think these people are so committed to the college experience that it seems to bleed out of every sleeve and pocket. I go to school here, it seems to demand you notice, and my pants aren't afraid to back me up!

In a way, it's as close to being a superhero as we're likely to get. Bold primary colors, large letters, built for comfort and durability. If you think about can huggies as the kind of thing you might fit into a utility belt, well you have yourself a pretty good alter ego. Of course, it's pretty much the same alter ego as everybody else on campus, but still. Strength in numbers. And, plenty of villains to fight against in the Big Ten.

So your apparel can run the gamut from reminding the world where you go to school to simply being, years later, a reminder of those first experiences trying to define yourself in the world at all. Maybe it's sentimental to sigh over every hole and stain that has been added over time, to those Fighting Illini sweatpants that the next generation can nearly fit into. But these things are floating along in the same stream of time as we are, and I think they're a pretty good way to tell how deep the river is, how fast it's moving.
