subject: You Can Cure Bad Breath [print this page]

Chronic halitosis, or bad breath, is an embarrassing condition to have. There are many causes for halitosis, but one of the lessor known factors is tonsil stones. Tonsil stones are tiny whiteish-yellow clumps of bacteria, mucus and debris that develop in the nooks and crannies of the tonsils. There are, however, several things you can do to get rid of tonsil stones and prevent the formation of new ones.

Have a crunchy snack. By eating celery or other crunchy vegetables, such as carrots and cucumbers, can help dislodge tonsil stones. These vegetables have tough strands of fiber that act like mini brush bristles and scrape the stones out of the tonsils' tiny pockets and folds.

Gargle with vinegar. You can break down tonsil stones in as little as 72 hours if you gargle once a day with a mixture of 1 Tbs. vinegar and 1/4 cup warm water. Vinegar will dissolve calcium, which is a building block of these growths.

Wash your sinuses. Post-nasal drop fuels the growth of tonsil stones. You can get rid of post-nasal drip by rinsing your sinuses once a day with a saline nasal spray. You can find these sprays in your local pharmacy.

Consume probiotics. The reason that tonsil stones cause halitosis is that they are packed with sulfer-producing bacteria. You can get rid of this bacteria by eating lots of yogurt made with healthy live cultures. According to a recent study, you should eat at least one cup of yogurt daily. Sugar-free yogurt is better because the sulfer-producing bacteria thrive when they have access to sugar.
