It will require will power and determination simply to control the cravings that will accompany the withdrawal stage. As any smoker attempts to cleanse their body of the nicotine that they have consumed, their body will continue to look for that nicotine intake in order to function in the fashion to which it has become accustomed. This need for nicotine will urge the smoker to continue smoking in order for their systems needs to be sated. This is where focus and strength of conviction comes into play. They will need to fight off the urge to light up in order for them to resume life as a non-smoker. During the process of quitting their cigarette addiction many people will resort to drugs to assist them with the withdrawal stage. There are many prescription medications available for this purpose, however it is recommended to discuss the use of these aids with your doctor prior to use. Many of these medications offered to the public to help overcome the urge to smoke are simply another habit you will need to break at some stage, meaning that they are designed to trick the brain into thinking that its nicotine requirement has been satisfied. So the smoker will experience the same feelings they would encounter if they had just finished a cigarette. The body can come to rely on that feeling just as easily as relying on actually having a smoke. Some of these products do still contain nicotine, in smaller doses than an actual cigarette, and can therefore still require a process to eliminate the reliance upon them. Despite any benefit that you may gain from using medication, you will still need to bear in mind that a concerted effort is required in order to successfully overcome the temptation to smoke. The first few days of your renunciation will really be the most difficult, so you need to be prepared to face the challenges that this procedure will entail. To be able to finally eliminate cigarettes from your life, you should try to stay away from situations which might remind you of smoking. For example, you may want to avoid places where you may encounter a group of smokers, eliminating any chance of being tempted to join them. You could try to replace a cigarette with healthier foods life celery, carrot sticks or a segment of orange, if you need something in your mouth, and if it is your hands which yearn for something to hold on to, you could replace the cigarette with a pencil. If you generally associate smoking with drinking, then you might choose to avoid drinking alcohol also. Keep your mind off the idea of smoking, and try to keep yourself busy so that you will not focus on the temptation to smoke. If, in spite all your efforts to avoid smoking, you are still craving a cigarette try to sit back, relax and reflect on why you are quitting. Remind yourself of your objectives. Constantly remind yourself that you CAN do this, you ARE strong enough to win this battle against smoking. Always bear in mind that a single cigarette will have an effect on your efforts to stop. One cigarette will see you back at the very beginning of your struggles all over again. And don't discount the power of emotional support. The support you can get from your family and friends will be one of the strongest driving forces in helping you to succeed.
