subject: Get Your Body Back In Balance [print this page]

Almost all of us find ourselves up against back pain at some point or another. Generally, its origin is an uncomfortable sleeping position, poor posture, or a minor injury, all of which can be remedied fairly easily.

But ongoing discomfort can also be the result of spinal misalignment, which can have a multitude of causes, including everyday wear and tear on the body. If this is the case for your ailing back, how can you get your body back in balance? Well, you may be pleased to learn it isn't very difficult!

Most of us spend a good deal of the night tossing and turning, even if we're unconscious while doing so. The twisting motions tend to throw off the normal alignment of your spine, causing pain throughout the following day.

When this process is repeated over and over, you are bound to be left stiff and aching constantly, though it may be mild enough to dismiss it with a couple ibuprofen. But to cut it down for good, switch out your normal pillow for a specially designed orthopedic pillow. These are made for back and side sleepers, as these are the healthiest positions for your back.

If you are a stomach sleeper, it is time to train yourself not to be. Chiropractors always suggest this to their patients, though it might be a difficult adjustment. Side sleepers would benefit from placing a small pillow shaped to fit between the legs in order to keep them separated during the night, which places the lower portion of the spine in proper alignment.

If you sleep on your back, you should bend your legs at the knees and keep them raised like this throughout the night. There are also wedge-shaped pillows designed to do this for you.

Again, making adjustments like this may cause some initial sleep disruptions. It may seem uncomfortable, but believe me, I can say from experience that once you have gotten used it, you will be grateful that you made the change.

It will also be beneficial for you to spend some time stretching both before you get into bed and after you rise in the morning to increase circulation and banish stiffness.

A regular visit to a chiropractor in NYC--about once or twice a month--will work wonders for putting your body back in balance. Their primary job is to provide relief and healing through focusing on your spine. The pain does not have to be chronic or intense for you to seek treatment from a chiropractor--you just have to want to live your best life!
