subject: What People Should Know About Canada Winter Vacations [print this page]

Each year Canada is turning into an increasingly popular winter spot. Snow lovers who want to take time out from the slopes can enjoy other wonders in Canada such as carnival tours and sports centers as well as a tour off the sophisticated end of the country.

Based on Canadian travel packages available it can be said that more and more are becoming aware of the place as great winter destination. There are ski packages, city packages, special events packages and combination packages. Canada is reputed for being a splendid ski place.

Jasper as well as Banff and Mont Tremblant are considered everyday names for avid skiers. Ride a helicopter to get to Alberta or British Columbia mountains or stay behind and enjoy the same skiing and food delights at the Laurentians or Quebec.

There is more to winter months in Canada than mere skiing. Canada counts ice hockey among its more popular sports and has professional teams representing its major cities. Outdoor and indoor ice rinks abound plus a four mile one in Ottawa that has been tagged the longest across the globe.

Recognition for the snowmobile that started out in Quebec and spread elsewhere across the globe is still widely observed in Canada. Besides snowmobile clubs the marked paths for snow machines add to the fun weekend adventure.

Consider snowshoeing as a great winter sport. There are snowshoeing trails about to open in different locations.

A river or lake in Canada that has a one or two foot layer of ice is no deterrent to fishermen who continue doing their sporting passion. To begin fishing all they require are some roof cover and a carved hollow in the ice. At the little village of La Perade, Quebec, hundreds of colorful shacks are hauled onto the ice and, from them, fisherman catch little tomcods by the thousands.

A number of lakes in Ontario and other provinces are also open to winter fishing with many places even supplying the equipment. Tobogganing is another favorite pastime.

Quite a number of places have the toboggans featuring manufactured chutes to take some of the speed off the ride. A huge Quebec City slide serves up breathtaking scenery while going down icy cliffs.

Some ski resorts reserve mild slopes for exclusive toboggan riding. Dog and snowshoe races along with ice castle creations and delicious food and drinks all welcome the beginning of carnival festivities. Wintertime carnivals in Canada come in all shapes and sizes but one thing is for sure they are all barrels of fun.

The international contests capture the attention of athletes everywhere. Sled dog races and snowshoe classics are the centerpieces during the festivities. Rare artwork and antique purchases from far flung stores happen as usual be it winter or autumn.

Most of the artwork and soapstone carvings people choose to take home with them are those crafted by Eskimos and Indians. For some cultural appreciation visitors have the symphony doing several concerts and the ballet company shows. In Montreal theater can be watched in either French or English and then there are the delightful Vancouver musicians and opera that have amused many travelers.

Priceless treasures can be seen any day of the year in the Toronto as well as Saint John and Vancouver and Ottawa museums. The more lively Canadian cities serve up nightly attractions from cool discotheque spots to chic clubs and hotels.

There is a somewhat sunken or hidden Montreal city that people can turn to when the weather proves too much to bear. Commercial establishments like hotels and theaters along with shops and the rail stations are connected with various apartment towers and office buildings and the famous quiet subway the Le Metro.

Toronto along with Winnipeg are examples of cities considering the subterranean development concept. A pleasure as simple as striding by snow is usually enough for the cheery traveler.

There is food provided from all over including Quebec French fare as well as Saskatchewan steaks and the delectable stuff from the Atlantic province British Columbia. These and more are reasons to drop by Canada soon.
