I have a new idea for a reality show; it'll be about being a new mom and what it's actually like. Those who have never had a child seem to think that being a new mommy is this wonderful, constantly happy time in a women's life. There's some truth to that, but new moms do not always feel happy, and some of them get the 'baby blues" and some have postpartum depression.

Did you know over 50% of women feel some type of "baby blues" after they have given birth? So you're not alone, and certainly not a bad mother because you're feeling down. Many women can feel restless, impatient, anxious and irritable after they have a baby. When you think of everything you and your baby have been going through the last year, then feeling these things should not surprise you. Being pregnant and giving birth are extremely emotional times, so it's not really a surprise you would feel emotionally drained following childbirth.

Many women report that the 'baby blues' feelings are gone as speedily as they came. There is help for the portion of those mothers for whom the symptoms remain. Some symptoms of postpartum depression are: not being able to concentrate, low energy, severe emotional ups and downs, unhappiness, absolutely no interest or extreme interest in the baby, loss of appetite, and fearful of hurting the baby. A mother with postpartum does not have to exhibit all symptoms everyday. What they do feel each day is guilt, shame and they have a tendency to become isolated.

It saddens me to say that we don't know yet what can cause post partum depression. Factors like lack of sleep, isolation after the baby is born, stress and hormones that affect the brains chemistry are what some researchers think could cause postpartum depression. Many women believe that motherhood is this wondrous awesome thing that should be the most rewarding experience in your life. On the same day it can be the most rewarding and the hardest ob you'll ever have. Because of these two clashing ideals you have mothers that become exteremly depressed after gving birth.

You might not be able to see that you are suffering from postpartum depression. It isn't uncommon to think you are not feeling great due to lack of sleep you are experiancing. You need to pay attention to freinds and family that are telling you that they are concerned about you. If you recognize these symptoms or someone has expressed concern, call your physician. You will find many support groups out there which can help, however you still need to see your physician. Do not feel ashamed or guilty. Postpartum depression frequently occurs and with help and support from your doctor and loved ones you will be feeling better soon.

Know that a lot of women experience the "baby blues" but if you're experiencing these symptoms for a long period of time call your physician. You need to stay healthy for your new little baby.
