References are put on a resume for a reason. Employees who do not give references on their resume should especially be asked for their references. References should always be called. If someone cannot give adequate work references, there is a problem there. It's much better to get insight into a potential employee if a previous employer is spoken to.

One thirty minute session with a potential employee is not enough time to gain adequate insight into their personality traits and their work competencies.
