Home energy costs are one of the easiest costs to reduce in home ownership. Some estimates say that up to 56% of energy costs are unwarranted and could be eliminated!

I can't tell you how to do that, but this is a great start:

1. Really turn off the TV

Most TVs when turned off still consume energy (sometimes up to 25% of when on). So get a power-strip, plug the tv into it, and turn off the power-strip when not in use. Use a surge protector and protect the TV during a lightning storm.

2. Unplug appliances when you don't use them.

The coffee maker, DVD player, Stereo, Toaster, Phone charger, etc. all consume energy when not in use but plugged in. Do you really need them plugged in all the time? Didn't think so. Unplug 'em.

3. Change your computer settings.

Change your computer to its energy-saving setting. It will reduce the screen brightness and turn the screen off more quickly (when you aren't using it). An easy way to save money. Perfect.

4. Let your dishes air dry.

There is no need to use the heat dry on a dish washer. Let them sit there a while and dry on their own. Or better yet, wash them by hand, if you have time. Save even more.

5. Use more natural light.

Open the window shades and turn off the lights. The natural light of the sun can have a euphoric effect on some people as well. So you'll be saving more money and be happier at the same time.

Save that money on your energy bills and use it to enjoy yourself or put it towards the other stresses in life: credit cards, retirement, mortgage payments. Pretty soon you'll be stress free, enjoying the sunshine. Good luck!
