A profession in medical surgical nursing can draw on many aspects of what it takes to be a nurse.

Medical surgical nursing can require additional on the training and education. Also there are certain other characteristics needed by the nurse to fully make the most of this specialization.

These can include:

Endurance. Things don't always go the way you thought they might in a hospital setting. As a medical surgical nurse your attention may need to be in several places at once, this is where good prioritization skills come into play.

Handling stress. Those in the medical surgical nursing field have times when everything about there shift just goes awry. Nothing seems to go right, and patients get very demanding. This is when you have to push through the stress and make it work for you.

Willingness to take orders. While all nurses must be able to take and carry out orders, medical surgical nursing can present more face-to-face encounters with doctors than other areas of hospital work. Those who don't mind constant contact with doctors thrive in this area.

Ability to be around blood. As a med surg nurse blood will be a part of your job, lets face it. The smells, sights and sounds of working as a medical surgical nurse can become routine for the most part, but there are just some things you never get used to.

Willingness to learn. Med surg nursing is a specialty, just like any other specialty in nursing. And having the ability and the drive to learn more to become certified means higher pay, and understanding your job better.

Those who enjoy the day to day challenge of helping patients overcome their medical problems, medical surgical nursing can be a rewarding occupation.
