subject: Scotland, Alternative Vacations [print this page]

The country of Scotland offers the most glorious scenery to be found in the UK making it a most amazing holiday destination. Countless numbers of tourists opt for Edinburgh as their main destination, whereas some choose something a bit different. This article examines vacations in Scotland and a selection of things to do while in Scotland. The article also examines the Wickerman Festival.

With an incredibly diverse countryside the selection of things to do is endless. Climbing mountains is highly popular, as are hill walking vacations. The most common holidays are fishing or golf. With Scotland being the place of origin of golf it should not surprise you that that you are hardly ever too far from a minimum of one first class golf course. With the Rivers Tweed, Tay and Spey you can be sure of an incredible day fishing. But what if you want an alternative vacation?

Increasing numbers of people are choosing music festivals their yearly vacation. Even though the vast majority of music festivals are huge with the main aim of making cash, there exists a small selection of family music festivals, for example the Wickerman Festival.

More of a music and arts festival, the yearly Wickerman festival takes place on a farm near the village of Dundrennan, Dumfries & Galloway approximately five miles away from Kirkcudbright in Scotland. The event theme is the 1973 cult film "The Wicker Man" which features appearances by Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt, Britt Ekland and Diane Cilento.

The first Wickerman Festival took place in July, 2002 and was created by a local guy called Sid Ambrose. With little experience of organizing an event of such magnitude it is surprising that it still exists, especially when you think about the present economic climate. The Wickerman Festival has altered slightly each year and has an almost cult following itself.

The festival is immensely family friendly it features a great many activities for children for example, various fairground rides, a mountain biking trek, face painting and various workshops. This can be easily proven by searching MSN, Yahoo or Google for photo's of the 2010 Wickerman Music Festival or simply visit the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.

Close to the festival site is the village of Kirkudbright where you will find many locations used in the film for example Harbour Cottage which was used for the bakery and High Street Gallery which was used for May Morrison's post office and sweetshop. You will discover that there are many places worth visiting in Dumfries and Galloway and it is really worth spending a few days here so that you can visit all of the tourist attractions. Common destinations in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Bed and breakfast in Scotland is nearly always excellent and is also very affordable and much less expensive than staying in a hotel.
