subject: Speed Camera Cuts [print this page]

The nation is divided on the benefits of the speed camera; whether they are a welcome distraction for speeding drivers, to cause them to slow down and be mindful of the area, or whether they are a nuisance that people are aware of, and therefore slow down for.

But the government cuts have meant that speed cameras have been very publically turned off, or are not being renewed when they come to the end of their useful lives. Ad it is casing uproar with Car Insurance customers and road users across the country.

Some communities, after having their cameras removed and finding that drivers who would have normally slowed when approaching a camera are speeding through, are taking their own actions to keep the speed down. In Flintshire, residents have dressed a scarecrow up as a policeman with a speed gun, with the intention of slowing down wayward drivers causing potential danger in their areas.

Local people are concerned that their roads could become race tracks for speeding drivers, with little concern about the safety of the pedestrians and children in the area.

The transport secretary has backed the governments decisions to cut funding for the cameras, stating that they should never have been the first and last resort in road safety, and that local councils should be assessing each individually on its merit to the community.

Some localities have considered funding the cameras themselves, but with the cost of running, Development and admit being over five thousand pounds a year, the thought has had to be put on the back burner.
