Vagifem, generically known asestradiol is composed of estrogen. Estrogen is a sexual hormone that is present in the human body and helps in regulating many processes in the body. Vagifem (Estradiol Varginal) is used in the treatment of particular type of menopause disorder such as dryness, burning and itchy feeling in the virginal area. It also helps in preventing the irritation and unevenness caused while urinating.

How should I take this medication?

This medication is available in the form of Vagifem 25mcg tablets and Vagifem cream. Take the drug as per the dosage and frequency suggested by the doctor. As estradiol can also be used to treat multiple disorders, do not use it without consulting your doctor first. Do not expose Vagifem (Estradiol) cream in heat, light and moisture always keep in dry and cool place. The patient should check the direction give in the label of the medication.

What are the possible side effects of using this drug?

The patient might feel some of the Vagifem (Brand) side effects such as contraction or pain of chest, arm or shoulder pain, nausea problem, excessive sweating, feel numbness, weak feeling, headache, nervousness, unclear vision, speech problem, swelling at the part of the leg, stomach cramp, breast lump and change of color of skin or eyes into yellow (jaundice). Vagifem may also induce allergic reactions like hives, breathlessness, swelling on face, lips, tongue, and throat. It may make the mouth go dry, induce drowsiness and light headedness. Patient may feel weak and irritation. As it makes the skin more sensitive, the patient easily gets bruised, blisters and peeling of skin rash. Beside this, the patient may also feel vomiting, decrease of appetite, swelling of breast, lack of interest in sex, impotency, slight marginal headache, dizzy, dryness or pain of virginal, swelling of feet or ankles, depressions, menstrual problem and bleeding from vagina.

What precautions do I need to follow while using Vagifem?

Do not use Vagifem medication without consulting the doctor if the patient is suffering from blood colt or bleeding, prior record of stroke or circulation disorder, unconditional virginal bleeding, related breast or uterine cancer. People suffering from blood pressure problem, angina disorder, heart, kidney or liver disorder, asthma problem, epilepsy convulsion, diabetes problem, gall-bladder infection and uterus surgery should not use this medication without the doctor's advice as they might need a dosage adjustment or there is a need to perform special test. The patient should go for regular check ups after every 3 to 6 months as the long term use of this medication might increase the risk of stroke. Pregnant women or women who is planning to get pregnant should not use Vagifem without the doctor's recommendation as it can harm the unborn baby and as this medication decrease the effectiveness of the birth control pill consult the doctor and use effective form of contraceptive pill.
