subject: NEED FOR QUALITY EDUCATION [print this page]

The hunt for gaining 'degrees' is on the rise.Parents and students are equally curious to know about the colleges that offer various courses of their choice. To cater to the needs of such aspirants, new colleges are springing up every where. The courses they offer are so attractive with a promise of an alluring word 'ready placement through campus interviews'.Naturally, the students fall a prey to these;and the parents are no exception to it.Neither of them thinks if the course really suits their calibre and interests.

The Government and the University Grants Commission have permitted for setting up universities in every district.Students belonging to different categories are given a fee reimbursement and also scholarships during their course of study. This is irrespective of the academic merit. So many so called 'students' join the colleges and universities at the cost of the government, not for gaining education but to gain a 'degree', thereby diluting the standards.

It is a pre-requisite to a college student that he/she must understand the subject, when it is taught in English. This is not a matter of hypocrisy or for 'style',but to make the student competent to face the future career with dignity, anywhere in the world. But,very disheartening to admit the fact, even the students who are specialising in English literature demand that the subject be'taught' (not lectured) in native language and not in English. They require a spoon-feeding of the 'question and answers' in the Papers of study and,do not take the minimum pains to buy the prescribed books, leave alone the reference books. If not buying, at least they can go to the libraries and acquire the needed subject. As the newly established universities and colleges do not value the much-valued libraries, there are no equipped libraries. This is a good excuse to the students. They completely depend upon the'material' from the lecturers.

The students ought to give seminar presentation to which they firmly offer resistance. The student organizations are always hyper active to fight for the award of marks, which is never denied by the university authorities for the fear of being blackmailed,as they have their loopholes in the administration. All this is very ridiculous but that is the dismal picture of higher education.

The teaching community has to keep up the values of true education and inject this into the minds of the student community. The students must be made to understand that education is not a commodity available in the shops, but it is a property achieved with pains and sincerity from the sacred portals of colleges/universities.The students must be made to understand that education is not just learning from the books but a sagacity to take knowledge from the teachers and the portals. Education has to be given the value it rightly deserves.
