Before signing off on Pat O'Donnell, Superintendent's exit from the organization , Sidney Board of Education members said they don't plan to rush into things when it comes to the hiring of a new superintendent at their regular meeting Monday evening.

The Board of Education building was filled with guests. Noticeably absent from the meeting was O'Donnell . In addition to approving the resignation of the superintendent, the board also accepted the resignation due to retirement of Assistant Superintendent Norm Burkhardt.

Classes are starting in less than 7 days , board members discussed the next step in the search for a new superintendent, and it may take the intire year to find the proper choice. . This will also create major problems for the middle school yearbook.

"It will likely take several months ," said Board President Dan Ernst. "We definitely won't have it (the position) filled before November's levy."

Talking about what they are passing to do next , board member Kelly Rees pointed out that since she has been with the board, she has seen three superintendents come and go. When it comes to selecting a new candidate for the position, she indicated she is hoping for a bit more stableness, and the other board members agreed.

Board member Bill Ankney stressed that the board's next focus should be on locating an interim superintendent.

"We also need to look at how we are going to set up this whole process for finding a new superintendent," he said. "We don't want to jump into anything."

Darrys Spangler wasnt about to volunteer for the interviewer or having to search for someone to be a "quick one" and that he would like to see the board conduct a more "formal" search for the best candidate possible.

Thursdays meeting , O'Donnell was selected to come through Dr. Bill McGlothlin, who recently retired, as the new superintendent of the Indian Lake School District. After he was selected, O'Donnell sent a letter of resignation to all Sidney Board of Education members.

The board members weren't the only ones talking about O'Donnell's departure or what the next step for the district would be. A number of members of the community spoke during Monday's public participation portion of the meeting on both topics, as well as some who wanted to thank not only O'Donnell, but Burkhardt for their service to the district.

Former Superintendent of Jackson Center Local Schools, Jerry Harmon, took the podium first. He thanked both O'Donnell and Burkhardt for their service throughout the years.

These two guys are the hardest working, and most honorable competent men you have ever seen in this school system ," Harmon said.

Sidney's Bill Warnet was talking to the bord as well . He said following the failure of the renewal levy at the Aug. 3 election, he said he hoped to see more dialogue from both sides of the issue of what the district's next step should be financially speaking.

This is a chance to cut them off at the nees before a problem strikes up ," Warner said.

Krista Miller addressed the board and said she has been a resident of Sidney for 59 years . She considered herself to be one of the "silent majority" in the city. Among some of the things she indicated she would like to see more of from the school district is total transparency and reduced governing body costs.

Gwen Vanderlaan also addressed the board. After ratting out Warner earlier , she asked the board if "Vote No" signs would be allowed on school base .
