A big thing when your children do move out is what to do with their room? Some could not care less what you do; others can quickly become heartbroken at even the slightest change or alteration. Many cunning parents slowly make the changes over time; gradually introduce new wallpaper and furniture whilst posters and other decorative pieces find their way to the bin. Transforming their former room into a guest room for example, means they will still be able to use it when they do come home, it will just also be in a good state for when others stay too.
While your children have fled the nest you don't want to emancipate them from your lives or the family home. Go to that building that houses your vehicle and take some time to build some vermin and moisture proof cupboards. Garage storage is an easy thing to build yourself or purchase at the hardware stores to just bolt on your walls. Fill this with your family's treasures and history. Mark off a corner of the living room or family room for shelves and keep the trophies and pictures visible so the pull on your heart strings isn't too strong those first months.
If you have been waiting for an excuse to finally sort out all the clutter in your house, to have a clear out and make better use of the space then there is really no better time. Just don't be too hasty all at once, as you never know, it might not take too long for your sons or daughters to miss their home comforts and look to moving back in.
