subject: Outdoor Lighting For Summer 2010 And Landscape And Garden Lighting [print this page]

Summer is just around the corner and it is set to be a hot one in the UK. In the summer months we all like to be outdoors as much as possible especially enjoying our garden and the warm weather. Summer days are great for family BBQs, garden parties, and relaxing with a book on the decking. If you do not have outdoor lighting you may have to cut your time in the garden short because once it starts going darker you have to go sit inside. By placing outdoor lighting around the exterior of your home and your garden you can enjoy the summer evening all night long.

There are many options for outdoor lighting whether you prefer more traditional styles of lanterns, lamp posts, and wall lights or perhaps you prefer the more modern and funky designs such as bollards and brick lights. If you have decking in your garden you can easily add lighting around this area, some decking lights need to be fitted when fitting the wood but there are many options that allows you to do this post installation.

It is good to have a few different options of outdoor lighting but choose the different options of lighting in the same style such as all in black cast aluminium or white oval shapes. Choose a few lights that fit on your house on the exterior walls and then a few lights for around the garden area.

Outdoor lighting is not only good for enjoying your summer nights in the garden but its good for security as well. When coming home late at night it is much safer to have a light on the outside of your home when you are coming in the front door than struggling in the dark. You can also place the lights on a motion sensor or even timed which deters thieves and is great if you are on holiday for a couple of weeks.

With the summer fast approaching many people are starting to get to work in the garden so it is ready to completely enjoy once the hot weather sets in. One aspect of your garden which cannot be ignored is the lighting. Placing strategic lighting around your garden and the outside of your home can make a massive difference to how it looks and how much you will use your garden.

Many people think you have to hire a landscape artist or professional gardener to know how to light their garden effectively but you can save yourself the money of hiring some and do it yourself. Following simple guidelines you can transform your garden into a magically lit area that you can enjoy all summer long. Once you have decided to add lighting to your garden area you need to create a plan of your outside space. This plan needs to be accurate and to scale to ensure it looks as good in the garden as it does on paper.

The plan helps you see what will work and won't work without actually going out and buying and fitting the lighting. The more time you put into the research and planning of the garden the better the results will be. On the plan you can play with any ideas that you have of where to place the lighting in the garden, on the outside on the home, along pathways, the bottom of trees, seating areas, around the decking, and so on.

Once you have fully thought out your garden lighting plan you can then purchase the lights. Still it is advised not to rush in and fit the lights straight away. Wait until it gets darker and simply p[lace the lighting fixtures where you have pinpointed on your plan and turn them on to see what the lighting looks like. You can always alter your plan accordingly. This way you can double check the lighting looks good in that position before you do all the work of fitting it.
